I saw the email from our HR this morning that there was a break-in and a few laptops were stolen from our office last night. I had left mine at work last night. I do that at times to have the flexibility to bike to work (which I clearly didn’t) and didn’t want to carry the extra weight on my back while biking. This morning the lazy side of me convinced me that I’ll exercise over the weekend instead and after dropping Vivek at work, I was driving towards work.
My car has a mind of its own and it decided to shut down when I took the ramp off 237E to merge onto Lawrence Expressway. The steering wheel wouldn’t turn and I saw a few service lights blinking on the dashboard….I was hoping I make it to the end of the ramp so I am not stuck on it. Trust me it’s a scary feeling to be driving at 35 mph on a ramp and your steering wheel is not obeying you! Luckily there was no one right behind me so I managed to chug the car along the ramp.
It finally gave up and stopped right at the place where the ramp ends such that there was space for 1 car to maneuver around and merge on to Lawrence. I got off the car thinking someone might hit my car from behind if they can’t stop on time (Unfortunately they couldn’t see my car till the very end so if they were coming faster than they should be off the ramp, they wouldn’t be able to maneuver around my car to merge onto Lawrence and instead run into it). I called AAA road side assistance and they dispatched a tow-truck immediately.
While I waited on the side walk waving at the cars to slow down as they merged onto Lawrence, a couple of truck drivers pulled over and decided to help me. They said my car was in a dangerous spot and could be hit if someone was not careful.
They pushed my car a little further so that it would be off the ramp completely. God bless them!
All this happened in a span of 20 minutes until the tow truck arrived. The tow truck guy was nice enough to wait for me while I went up and picked up my laptop. (Yeah it wasn’t stolen..phew!)
My car is now at the repair shop and I am at home sipping tea and backing up all the data from my laptop.
Why am I narrating this whole incident?
I try not to generalize but this time I think I might just…don’t buy a used Saturn with 90K + miles…I have had to get it towed twice so far and taken to the repair shop 4 times since I bought it 6 months ago.
We tend to take a lot of things for granted while driving…I realized that as I was waving and asking drivers to slow down as they merged onto Lawrence….they didn’t expect a car broken down at the end of the ramp and assumed they could merge just as easily as they do everyday.
Its been a year of records…my 3rd time this year in the tow truck now… I might as well just buy one for myself : 3 cheers for AAA btw!
Might make an interesting read for a Friday

How I named this blog
Vivi created this blog for me so that he has more stuff to read at work now! We went playing poker 2 weekends back (my 1st and last time in a casino). Vivi kept on saying "Play like an iggita" after every round for some reason. Maybe he thought it was supposed to bring good luck. But alas we lost it all...at least I did!
I used to write "good morning emails" when I was at Hughes and send them to a few selected (actually more like 15) people. That was the 1st thing I used to do every morning after getting in to work. Made me feel good and those 15 people entertained. I guess blogging achieves the same purpose except that now its open to all.
Gtg...gonna go play board games @ the Tully's in Bella Botega now with some buddha but smart people.
1 last note: I hate Macs! It shouldnt be so difficult to find "End" on a laptop now should it?
